Casablanca has recently been the venue for a strategic milestone in Morocco’s industrial and agricultural future. OCP Nutricrops, in partnership with OCP Green Water and INNOVX, has signed two memorandums of understanding aimed at transforming captured CO₂ at the Jorf Lasfar platform into levers of sustainability for water, agriculture, and industrial innovation.
The Jorf Lasfar platform, the largest in the world for integrated phosphate fertilizer production, will be equipped starting in 2027 with carbon capture modules capable of generating significant volumes of usable CO₂. This gas, typically regarded as waste, will be reinjected into desalination projects, green fertilizer production, and new industrial applications. The goal is to turn a decarbonization challenge into an economic and ecological opportunity.
The first agreement, concluded with OCP Green Water, focuses on water resilience. The captured CO₂ will be used to optimize desalination, particularly by adjusting pH levels and ensuring water remineralization to make it suitable for domestic and industrial use. This partnership is part of the Green Investment Program of the OCP Group, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2040 and total coverage of water needs through unconventional resources by 2027.
The second memorandum, signed with INNOVX, targets the agricultural sector and industrial innovation. It outlines the development of carbon-enriched solutions for plant nutrition and the production of new low-carbon inputs, thereby contributing to a more resilient and sustainable agriculture. Projects like INNOVX’s ammonium sulfate illustrate this desire to transform by-products such as phosphogypsum and CO₂ into valuable inputs for industry and agriculture.
“Global agriculture faces unprecedented challenges. We believe these challenges must be turned into opportunities,” stated Youssef El Bari, CEO of OCP Nutricrops, emphasizing that these agreements represent a concrete step forward in the Group’s decarbonization roadmap.
On his part, Ahmed Marhou, Managing Director of the SBU Manufacturing, reiterated the ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 for scopes 1 and 2, and by 2040 for all scopes, combining operational excellence, energy efficiency, and innovations like hydrogen and green ammonia.
For Ahmed Znibar, director of OCP Green Water, the agreement embodies a new model where “carbon capture, renewable energy, and desalination” come together to enhance water security for cities, industry, and agriculture.
Finally, Amine Houssai, CEO of INNOVX, stressed the importance of a “circular carbon economy” capable of creating value and jobs while supporting global food security.
Through these partnerships, OCP confirms its role as a pioneer in large-scale sustainability integration, transforming CO₂ from a constraint into a valuable resource at the heart of a new growth model.
