The European Investment Bank (EIB) is strengthening its financial support for Morocco by providing an additional 10 million euros for the inclusive and sustainable forest management project. This support, finalized in January 2026, brings the total financing mobilized since December 2023 to 110 million euros under the national strategy “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030,” part of the Green Partnership linking the Kingdom to the European Union.
Implemented by the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) from 2024 to 2028, this structural program benefits from a European guarantee and includes, in its new phase, an investment grant of 10 million euros awarded by the Neighbourhood Investment Platform. The aim is to reconcile ecosystem preservation, local economic development, and adaptation to the effects of climate change.
The Moroccan forestry strategy particularly aims to restore over 600,000 hectares, combat soil erosion, better regulate water resources, and enhance the climate resilience of regions. It also aspires to create over 27,500 direct jobs and enhance the value of forestry and ecotourism value chains, with an estimated annual economic potential of over 5.2 billion dirhams.
In a context marked by forest degradation, overexploitation, and climate pressures, the project supported by the EIB is based on renewed governance, placing user populations at the heart of an inclusive management model. It revolves around three axes: sustainable watershed management, restoration of forest areas and national parks with a focus on ecotourism, and technical assistance aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the ANEF and diversifying its revenue sources.
With this additional contribution, the EIB and the European Union reaffirm their strategic commitment alongside Morocco for the protection of natural capital, territorial development, and the transition to a more sustainable and resilient growth model.
