Rabat – A national meeting dedicated to the launch of several civic acceleration projects for the energy transition was held on Tuesday in Rabat, on the occasion of the Sustainable Cities Week 2024.
Organized by the Moroccan Alliance for Climate and Sustainable Development (AMCDD) in collaboration with the National Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), under the banner “Urgency to accelerate Morocco’s energy transition,” this meeting provided an opportunity to present various projects and invite all state and non-state stakeholders in the energy sector to coordinate their efforts to realize the ambition of the Kingdom’s new development model by 2025.
Thus, several local, national, and international environmental civil society organizations and think tanks presented the results of collaborative work for the coordination and integration of actions they will undertake over the next three years with all state and non-state actors, as well as national and international partners, to accelerate the energy transition in Morocco.
The projects in question include a local technical and social engineering project for energy efficiency involving 150 households in Beni Mellal and Tata, a regional decentralized and participatory energy transition project, and the project “Local Energy-Climate Service: a territorial tool involving civil society as a catalyst for urban energy and climate transition, in service of integrated urban development.”
Additionally, there is the project for the valorization of renewable energies for smart and sustainable agriculture, the national dialogue and advocacy project, the Mediterranean project of the “TeraMed” initiative, the “Performance Indicator of Participatory Democracy for a green, global, and resilient transition” Index project, as well as the project “Ensuring a people-centered energy transition in Africa.”
Speaking on this occasion, the Director General of AMEE, Mohammed Benyahya, emphasized that civil society plays a central role in the energy transition, noting that the success of this transition largely depends on the active involvement of all citizens.
In this regard, he highlighted the importance of implementing a wide range of measures to raise public awareness about the challenges of the energy transition, indicating that collective mobilization is essential to ensure a just and equitable transition.
Mr. Benyahya particularly stressed the notion of energy sobriety, which goes beyond mere consumption reduction to include a deeper reflection on the actual needs of consumers. He called, in this respect, for a more thoughtful and reasonable approach to energy consumption, which constitutes an important step towards a more sustainable society.
This meeting also provided an opportunity to present the “Low Carbon Development Strategy by 2050,” as well as the initiative of the Civic Acceleration Platform for the energy transition open to all (Pacte Energie Maroc), its objectives, and its prospects.
