As part of the bilateral cooperation between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Federal Republic of Germany, the Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) and the German Development Bank (KfW) announce the signing of a financial aid contract amounting to 13.5 million euros, the first payment of a total amount planned of 3.5 million euros. This financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims to support the creation and development of the Green H2A platform (Green Hydrogen to Applications Park), a strategic infrastructure dedicated to promoting green hydrogen technologies and Power-to-X (PtX).
The Green H2A platform, co-developed by IRESEN, the OCP group, and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), will play a major role in the industrial deployment of the green hydrogen sector and its applications in Morocco. It will allow for the investigation, testing, demonstration, and adaptation to the local context of innovative technologies in this promising sector. Designed as a strong link to support industrial, academic, and socio-economic stakeholders, this infrastructure will contribute to the emergence of the sector through several missions:
– Provide technological support and decision-making assistance to public policies,
– Serve as a source of knowledge and expertise for the Moroccan private sector through technology transfer tools and innovation enhancement.
– Provide a state-of-the-art tool for capacity building and the development of highly qualified human capital for universities, research centers, and initial and vocational training institutions in the country.
This investment stems from negotiations conducted in 2020 between the Moroccan government and the German government, reflecting a long-standing strategic partnership in the field of renewable energies. KfW, the German development bank, brings its expertise in financing innovative and sustainable projects. By collaborating with IRESEN, it adds an international dimension to the project, thereby strengthening Morocco’s position as a regional and global hub for green hydrogen.
Mr. Samir Rachidi, Director of IRESEN, emphasized: “This partnership with KfW marks an important step for the development of the green hydrogen sector in Morocco and the region. The Green H2A platform will significantly contribute to the adoption of PtX technologies and the strengthening of local content and Made in Morocco, as well as the positioning of the kingdom in this future sector.”
For her part, Ms. Janne Rajpar, Director of the KfW Morocco Office, added: “We are convinced that this project will help strengthen the ties between our two countries while addressing the global challenges of climate change. By supporting IRESEN, we are backing a key player in the development of renewable energies and clean technologies in Morocco.”
