Morocco is well positioned to succeed in its energy transition, thanks to its booming automotive sector and abundant renewable energy resources, said Stefane Bantle, Minister-Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission in charge of the economic department of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Rabat, on Thursday in Casablanca.
“Morocco, with its renewable energy resources and its expanding automotive sector, is well positioned to lead its energy transition and the decarbonization of its transport sector,” Mr. Bantle emphasized during a conference held under the theme “Paths to Decarbonizing Land Transport,” as part of the Green Impact Expo & Summit (GIES 2025).
For him, the cooperation between Germany and Morocco, which has lasted for several years, constitutes a successful model to accelerate this transition.
Mr. Bantle noted that the strategic partnership linking the two countries in the fields of energy and sustainable transport is a major asset for the Kingdom in its decarbonization and modernization efforts of its infrastructure.
For her part, the Director of Road Transport at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, Bahija Boucetta, highlighted the considerable efforts made by Morocco in terms of decarbonization.
She cited several projects launched in collaboration with the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) to measure CO2 emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector.
These include the “Project: Advancing Transport Climate Strategies (TraCS)” which has created a monitoring system for emissions and energy consumption in land transport, as well as the project “Introducing Measures, Pathways and Roadmaps for Optimizing Vehicle Efficiency and Electrification” (IMPROVE), launched in 2024 to improve the energy efficiency of the Moroccan vehicle fleet and encourage the acquisition of eco-friendly vehicles.
For his part, Christian Hochfeld, Executive Director of Agora Verkehrswende, a think tank for energy transition in transport, noted that the future of land transport will be based on electric energy.
This evolution, he continued, opens up many economic and commercial prospects, both for Morocco and Germany, emphasizing that cooperation between the two countries is essential to succeed in this transformation and enable the Kingdom to play a leading role in the decarbonization of transport in Africa.
Initiated as part of the “IMPROVE” project commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, this conference supports the efforts of Morocco and Germany to promote energy transition and decarbonization of transport in response to global climate commitments.
