According to forecasts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), renewable energy will contribute 24% of electricity production in the United States by 2025.

The EIA anticipates a 3% increase in the total electricity production capacity in the country in 2024, followed by a 1% increase in 2025.

“Renewable energy, primarily solar energy, will account for most of this growth,” said the EIA.

In 2023, solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy represented about 21% of electricity production in the United States.

The EIA expects this figure to reach 24% in 2025, mainly due to the growth in solar energy usage.

Solar energy will provide 41% more electricity in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the agency. Additionally, in 2025, the share of solar energy in electricity production is expected to grow by another 25%.

“In 2025, we expect solar energy production to surpass the contribution of hydroelectricity for the first time in history,” emphasized Joe DeCarolis, EIA administrator.

“The availability of increased electricity production from renewable sources, particularly solar, in 2024 compared to 2023 reduces the growth of natural gas consumption beyond 2023 levels,” added the EIA.
