Since its creation in 1929, Cosumar has established itself as an essential reference in the Moroccan sugar sector. CSR, sustainability, aggregation, human capital development… the Moroccan giant continues to implement strategies to strengthen its leadership while respecting its environmental and social commitments. The details.

On the sidelines of its participation in the International Agricultural Show in Morocco (SIAM) in Meknès, which continues until April 28, the Cosumar group, a leader in the Moroccan sugar industry, highlights its ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, innovation, and socio-economic development. Since its beginnings as the first sugar producer in the Kingdom, Cosumar has evolved with the times, adopting responsible and innovative practices that have made it an essential player in the agri-food sector in Morocco and beyond.

With a business model centered on an innovative aggregation system, Cosumar closely collaborates with over 80,000 farmers spread across five regions of Morocco. This mutually beneficial approach optimizes sugar production in terms of quality and quantity while significantly improving the living conditions of farmers and their families. In 2023, the group processed 1.39 million tons of sugar beets and 402,400 tons of sugar cane, achieving high yields that testify to its operational efficiency.

Cosumar does not only dominate the local market: the company is also expanding its presence internationally. In 2023, it exported 752,000 tons of white sugar to more than 40 countries, the result of an investment of over 10 billion dirhams to modernize its facilities and push the boundaries of innovation and research and development. These efforts have not only strengthened its position as a leader but also affirmed its commitment to industrial excellence.

The environmental responsibility of the Moroccan company specializing in sugar extraction, refining, and packaging is reflected in the adoption of advanced technologies for optimal water management and the valorization of co-products aiming for zero waste. The group is also committed to eco-responsible practices that preserve biodiversity and ensure soil sustainability. Socially, Cosumar plays an active role by organizing training, improving access to healthcare, and promoting local economic development through support for local suppliers and investments in community infrastructure.

3 billion dirhams injected annually into the local economy

Since 2006, the Moroccan giant has launched a socio-economic inclusion program that has led to the creation of nearly 370 rural enterprises and injected more than 3 billion dirhams annually into the local economy. The group also guarantees the purchase of all sugar production at a fixed price, ensures the transport of the harvest, and provides specialized technical support, while offering health insurance and incentive bonuses.

Cosumar’s ambition is supported by the 2021-2030 Program Contract, which aims to increase cultivated areas and white sugar production. This strategic plan, introduced at SIAM, aligns with the country’s Generation Green strategy, thus promoting the modernization of industrial processes and rural entrepreneurship. In addition to strengthening the agricultural middle class, the program aims to create 150,000 additional workdays by 2030.
