Morocco remains at the top of the global ranking of countries leading the race towards carbon neutrality, climbing to the 8th position in the 2025 Climate Performance Index (CCPI), presented on Wednesday during the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Morocco continues to be a leader in this ranking, where it is recognized as a leading regional player in sustainable development and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, according to CCPI experts.
In the report presenting the 2025 CCPI ranking, the same experts praised Morocco’s prioritization of sustainable development, illustrated by its commitment to achieving 52% renewable energy in the national energy mix by 2030 and its significant progress in developing solar and wind projects.
First in Africa and in the Arab world in this ranking, dominated by Denmark (4th position – the top three positions are vacant), Morocco, which gains one place compared to the 2024 edition, surpasses several leading countries in decarbonization such as Germany (16th position), Norway (9th), and Sweden (11th).
The CCPI, which evaluates countries based on four criteria: greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policy, is an independent tool that examines the performance of climate change mitigation policies of 63 countries, including individual EU member states as well as the EU as a whole (27 countries).
