The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, highlighted, on Tuesday in Chengdu (China), the long-term Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which has enabled Morocco to become a regional pioneer in renewable energies since the launch of the national energy strategy in 2009.

In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of the second ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ms. Benali indicated that this high-level meeting provided “a wonderful platform to showcase the long-term vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”

The Sovereign’s enlightened Vision has ensured that, from the adoption of Morocco’s energy strategy in 2009, clean energies that contribute to global prosperity—particularly renewable energies and civil nuclear energy—are given a prominent place, she asserted.

Reiterating Morocco’s commitment as “a very active member of the IAEA and a proponent of multilateralism,” Ms. Benali emphasized the importance of cooperative approaches in advancing fusion technology, citing the major technological and financial challenges presented by this future energy source.

“Fusion requires mastery of extreme temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius, and the necessary financing amounts to billions of dollars,” she explained, while noting that “by 2050, fusion could become the technology capable of meeting global needs if it manages to compete with renewable energies.”

In this context, the minister called for mobilization around research and development in fusion to promote collaborative models and multilateral partnerships that provide countries in the Global South with pathways to development.

The second ministerial meeting of the WFEG of the IAEA represents, in this regard, an opportunity to reaffirm the essential role of science and technology in promoting peace and prosperity on a global scale, she assessed.

Taking place over three days at the Tianfu International Conference Center in Chengdu, the second ministerial meeting of the WFEG of the IAEA follows the inaugural meeting held in 2024 in Rome.

This international conclave gathers ministers, scientists, researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors from the energy sector to discuss strategies for the development and experimentation of fusion energy.

Participants will address, in particular, the political and financial frameworks, technological advancements, commercialization, and international cooperation capable of promoting fusion energy as a clean, decarbonized source that meets the growing demands for sustainable energy worldwide.
