The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has reached a new milestone in the energy development of southern Morocco. The public institution has recently launched the construction of a hybrid power plant in Aousserd, combining solar energy, battery storage, and thermal generation to ensure a continuous and clean electricity supply to this landlocked province in the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region.

With a total cost of 56.4 million dirhams, this strategic project, set to be operational by the end of 2026, is part of the development drive initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to make the southern provinces a model of sustainable growth and energy integration. The project is supported by several local institutions, including the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Wilaya, the Regional Council, the Provincial Council of Aousserd, and the General Directorate of Local Authorities.

Technically, the new plant will rely on a 1.5 MWp solar photovoltaic unit, backed by a 5 MWh storage system and a connection to the existing diesel plant (1.05 MVA). An intelligent supervision system (EMS/SCADA) will ensure optimal management of the various energy sources, thereby guaranteeing a stable electricity supply 24/7.

In addition to network reliability, this hybridization will significantly reduce production costs and CO₂ emissions, by leveraging the local solar potential more effectively. It represents a concrete step toward greener and more efficient energy autonomy for this area still isolated from the national interconnected grid.

However, the project’s impact extends beyond energy alone. Its construction will generate dozens of direct and indirect jobs, strengthen local technical skills, and contribute to stimulating the regional economy. Ultimately, the initiative is also expected to enhance Aousserd’s territorial attractiveness, supporting the establishment of sustainable economic and social activities.

With this new project, ONEE reaffirms its strategy of electrifying remote areas through innovative and environmentally friendly solutions, further consolidating Morocco’s position as a regional player in the energy transition.
