With the awarding of the NOOR Midelt 2 and 3 projects, ACWA Power strengthens its strategic position in Morocco and reaffirms its status as a global leader in the development of sustainable energy solutions. These two photovoltaic solar plants, equipped with innovative storage capacities, are fully aligned with Morocco’s vision for a greener energy mix by 2030.

Following an international tender launched by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), ACWA Power was selected to develop these large-scale projects, marking a new phase in the collaboration between the Kingdom and the Saudi group.

Each plant will have a capacity of 400 MWp, accompanied by a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 602 MWh, enabling a power output of 230 MWac for two hours. This hybrid system will enhance the stability of the national electricity grid by providing energy during peak consumption periods.

The chosen business model is based on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) scheme, with a 30-year electricity purchase agreement signed with MASEN. In addition to securing long-term production, this approach ensures the financial sustainability of the project while promoting private investment in the renewable energy sector.

Beyond energy performance, the NOOR Midelt 2 and 3 projects also aim for clear climate objectives. Ultimately, they will prevent the emission of 1.2 million tons of CO₂, contributing to Morocco’s overall efforts to reduce greenhouse gases.

“These projects embody our commitment to support the Kingdom’s ambition to achieve 52% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030,” said Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power. “As the leading private investor in Africa with $9.5 billion committed, we will continue to provide reliable, competitive, and low-carbon solutions.”

For Hashim Ghabashi, president of the MEASEA region at ACWA Power, these new projects illustrate the evolution towards next-generation hybrid solutions, essential for the Kingdom’s energy independence. Omar Alaoui Mhamdi, General Director of ACWA Power Morocco, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the group’s desire to strengthen its partnership with Moroccan authorities to develop projects with significant environmental and socio-economic impact.

Present in Morocco for over a decade, ACWA Power is already a key player in the local energy sector. The company operates the NOOR I, II, and III solar plants, as well as NOOR PV I, located in Ouarzazate, Laâyoune, and Boujdour. It is also active in wind energy through the Khalladi park in Tangier, bringing its total installed capacity in the Kingdom to 765 MW.

By investing in sustainable infrastructure, an effective public-private partnership model, and a long-term vision, ACWA Power continues to expand its footprint in Africa while actively participating in Morocco’s energy transition.
