The energy rehabilitation program for mosques, which aims to improve energy efficiency by using renewable energies, has equipped 6,255 mosques in various regions of the Kingdom with energy-efficient devices, the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, indicated on Monday at the House of Representatives.
In response to an oral question from the Authenticity and Modernity group regarding “the strengthening of energy efficiency in mosques,” Mr. Toufiq stated that studies are underway to equip an additional 1,704 mosques by the end of 2025, noting that this program, launched by his department to promote the use of renewable energies, aims to reduce energy consumption in public establishments by 20% by 2030.
He added that this program includes the installation of equipment to meet needs for electricity, hot water, and efficient lighting, particularly through the installation of energy-saving bulbs, solar water heaters, and the use of photovoltaic solutions for energy production.
Alongside these logistical efforts, he continued, the ministry organized this year, as part of raising awareness about energy efficiency techniques, training sessions for 264 participants, in addition to awareness workshops for 1,000 beneficiaries.
Mr. Toufiq also mentioned the establishment of the “Green Mosque” label, awarded to mosques that meet energy efficiency criteria, specifying that to date, 1,900 equipped mosques have been labeled.
Efforts continue to extend this distinction to other beneficiary mosques, he added, highlighting the establishment of a computer system to monitor consumption and the gradual deployment of a control and monitoring device.
