LG Electronics (LG) continues to be recognized for its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. The 2024 LG OLED evo televisions have received the Carbon Trust’s CO2 Reduction and CO2 Measurement certifications and the Environmentally Evaluated Mark from Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS), marking the fourth consecutive year of consistent recognition of LG’s ESG initiatives. LG’s latest OLED televisions have also received their second consecutive certification for recycled content, demonstrating LG’s sense of environmental responsibility.
The Carbon Trust works to guide the planet towards a carbon-free future by assessing the environmental impact of a product’s entire lifecycle, from production and distribution to use and disposal. The SGS certification focuses on resource efficiency and the presence of hazardous substances, while Intertek measures the percentage of recycled materials used. The respective approaches of these organizations promote responsible consumption practices across various industrial sectors and contribute to the broader goal of global sustainability.
Notably, the self-luminous nature of LG’s OLED televisions attracts significant attention during rigorous sustainability assessments. Unlike LCD televisions, LG’s OLED televisions do not require a backlight, which means a simpler structure and fewer components are needed. For example, LG’s 65-inch OLED evo television, made from ultra-lightweight composite fiber, requires only 40% of the plastic typically used in an LCD television of the same screen size and weighs 20% less.
Based on estimated sales of LG OLED televisions this year, the total amount of plastic used in LG OLED televisions from 2022 to 2024 is expected to be 45,000 tons less than that of LCD televisions sold during the same period. The reduction in plastic usage will lead to a decrease in carbon emissions of about 234,000 tons per year, equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed by a 30-year-old pine forest. This figure corresponds to one-third of the area of Seoul, or about 31,000 football fields.
Recycled plastics account for about 20% of the plastic used in the manufacturing of all LG televisions, including OLED televisions, which equates to approximately 4,000 tons of recycled plastic waste per year.
Beyond environmental activities, LG’s various ESG initiatives have received accolades from reputable national and international organizations. In 2023, LG was named in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the twelfth consecutive year. The DJSI World ranks among the top ten percent of the 2,500 largest global companies based on their long-term economic, environmental, social, and governance practices. The company’s inclusion on this prestigious list for twelve consecutive years is a significant milestone, as LG is the only South Korean company in the consumer electronics and leisure equipment category to achieve this feat.
Additionally, LG received an “A” overall rating during the ESG evaluation and rating announcement from the Korea ESG Standards Institute (KCGS) for three consecutive years, and last year, the company earned its fourth consecutive “A” rating from the ESG rating of Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI).
“LG OLED televisions are leading the market as the ultimate choice for premium visual experiences while going above and beyond and setting the bar for ESG standards,” said Baik Seon-pill, head of product planning at LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG will remain committed to continuing its efforts to create a better planet for all.”
