A workshop dedicated to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) opened on Monday in Salé, initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics in partnership with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
This meeting, which gathers international experts, including those from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aims to provide a strategic reflection space to identify opportunities and challenges related to the development of SAF in Morocco. It is part of the ACT-SAF program by ICAO, which supports countries in their energy transition efforts and in reducing emissions from the aviation sector.
At the opening of the proceedings, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, Zine El Abidine Britel, emphasized that civil aviation, while only representing about 2% of global CO₂ emissions, must actively contribute to climate objectives. He recalled Morocco’s commitment, under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to renewable energies, green hydrogen, and low-carbon solutions. SAFs, he stated, are among the most promising levers capable of reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels.
For his part, Gaëtan Ducroux, the European Union representative in Morocco, highlighted the role of the ACT-SAF program in strengthening technical capacities and providing access to financing for partner countries. He noted that 14 African countries, including Morocco, are already benefiting from this support, which falls under the Morocco-EU Green Partnership signed in 2022, the first of its kind concluded by the EU with a third country.
Discussions at this two-day workshop cover several themes: the role of SAF in decarbonizing aviation and the green economy, technical and regulatory aspects, as well as the current state and development perspectives of this sector in Morocco.
