In the context of strengthening its energy security, Portugal is considering an electrical interconnection with Morocco. The information was confirmed by the Portuguese Minister of the Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, who mentioned initial contacts between the two countries on this matter, although the project is still in the preliminary stage.

This initiative is part of a large plan of 400 million euros announced by the Portuguese government to modernize its electrical system, three months after a major outage that paralyzed the entire Iberian Peninsula. This plan includes 31 measures, including the development of electricity storage through batteries and the modernization of network control systems. Approximately 25 million euros will be allocated to securing critical infrastructures such as hospitals.

A connection with Morocco could build on existing projects, thus avoiding the high costs of a completely new construction. The idea of such an energy partnership with Morocco is not new, but it takes on particular significance in the current European context of energy transition and network resilience.
