Through its resolute commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience, Morocco has managed in just a few years to establish itself among the leading players in the ecological transition.

Driven by the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this national dynamic in favor of environmental protection has translated into a series of initiatives and institutional and legislative reforms aimed at developing a 100% Moroccan model.

This bold Royal approach has been crowned by the adoption of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (SNDD), an integrated roadmap aimed at accelerating Morocco’s transition to a green and inclusive economy by 2030, enshrining the right to sustainable development and in compliance with the multilateral conventions ratified by the Kingdom.

With a firm determination to also make renewable energies a pillar of its economic model, the Kingdom has launched the National Energy Efficiency Strategy, which positions sustainable energy transition as a driver of socio-economic development.

It is in this perspective that the investment effort in green hydrogen has significantly strengthened to occupy a privileged position in promoting renewable energies, capitalizing on the country’s natural resources (solar, wind…), its strategic geographical position, its world-class infrastructure, and its qualified human capital.

In addition to the mega-projects in solar and wind energy initiated under the impetus of His Majesty the King, with the ambition to cover 52% of energy needs by 2030, many flagship projects have emerged within a policy that respects the rules for the exploitation of natural resources, primarily water.

As a major component of sectoral policies, biodiversity preservation is placed at the forefront of the Executive’s agenda, as evidenced by the development of a legal arsenal of over 250 texts related to the protection of natural resources.

Beyond its unwavering commitment to serving the environment at the national level, Morocco continuously works to accelerate the action of global actors and to strengthen the confidence of the international community in innovative and solidarity-based multilateralism for a sustainable and resilient future.

This sustained commitment to promoting collective initiatives in the face of climate challenges was notably manifested through the organization of COP22 in Marrakech in 2016, which was a resounding success.

The Kingdom also made a remarkable contribution to COP29, held in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, during which Rabat adhered to the Declaration on the reduction of methane from organic waste, the Declaration on water, and the Declaration on enhanced action and tourism.

Morocco’s firm commitment to making South-South cooperation a strategic choice of its foreign policy was further illustrated during the third United Nations Conference on Oceans (UNOC3), held last June in Nice, France.

At this UN conference, His Majesty the King advocated, in His message to the participants, for a strategic re-reading of the African maritime role centered around three axes: blue growth; strengthened South-South cooperation and regional integration around ocean spaces; and maritime effectiveness through Atlantic synergies, noting that Africa, with its voices, assets, and vision, intends to fully express itself on its maritime destiny.

By capitalizing on these multiple advances, Morocco has all the assets to further consolidate its energy sovereignty and position itself in the decarbonized economy in the coming decades. Similarly, the increasing competitiveness of renewable energies opens up very promising new perspectives for the Kingdom, particularly in the fields of seawater desalination and green hydrogen.
