At the opening of the Regional Decarbonization and Sustainability event held Thursday in Marrakech, the president of ASMEX, Hassan Sentissi El Idrissi, stated that the transition to a low-carbon economy has now become a strategic priority for Morocco. More than just an obligation imposed by the international context, he sees it as a historic opportunity to reinvent the national economic model.
According to him, the new global financial architecture is increasingly oriented towards strict environmental criteria, particularly under the influence of European regulations. Multinational companies now demand rigorous carbon reporting, impacting all value chains. For Morocco, this means that it is no longer enough to adapt; it must become a reference player in the global sustainability dynamic.
Under royal impetus, the Kingdom has chosen to anticipate these changes rather than suffer from them. This strategic orientation translates into a clear ambition: to strengthen energy sovereignty, develop local industry, enhance territorial know-how, and attract investments through responsible practices.
The president of ASMEX emphasizes: decarbonization is not the prerogative of large groups. It must involve all economic actors, from artisans to agricultural cooperatives, including industrial SMEs and tourism professionals. It is in this spirit that the “Caravan of the Regionals” was launched. This initiative aims to provide concrete support to local businesses by mobilizing financial resources, technical training, innovative partnerships, and appropriate certifications.
Also speaking, Badia Bitar, representative of the Marrakech-Safi Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services, emphasized that this initiative fully aligns with regional priorities in sustainable development. Decarbonization, she recalled, is an integral part of Morocco’s commitments in the fight against climate change, particularly through its national sustainable development strategy and its determined international contribution (NDC).
She stressed that the adoption of sustainable practices today constitutes an essential competitiveness lever, in the face of international markets that are increasingly concerned about traceability, carbon footprint, and compliance with environmental standards.
Organized in partnership with ENGIE and several institutional actors, the Caravan of the Regionals of Decarbonization brings together experts, public decision-makers, and stakeholders for a day. It aims to identify the energies and solutions best suited to each territory to succeed in the energy transition, strengthen the competitiveness of Moroccan exporters, and promote sustainable, innovative, and responsible economic models.
