The Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment organized a high-level preparatory workshop on Friday in Bouknadel, one month before the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3), which will take place from June 9 to 13 in Nice.

Initiated at the Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training in partnership with the French Embassy in Morocco, this event is part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitments to ocean and coastal preservation, the Foundation stated in a press release.

Presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, Patron of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the Foundation plays a key role in mobilizing stakeholders around ocean issues at the national, continental, and international levels, the same source specifies.

The dynamics of the workshop were launched from the outset with the participation of the Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Zakia Driouich, the special envoy of the President of the French Republic for the United Nations Ocean Conference and Ambassador for the poles and maritime issues, Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, and the Senior Advisor for Environment, Urban Planning, and Mobility of the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tosi Mpanu Mpanu, it is added.

The various participants representing African governments, international organizations, the scientific community, civil society, and young project leaders for the ocean exchanged recommendations, particularly African ones, regarding the priorities to be addressed at the Nice conference, namely strengthening scientific knowledge about the oceans, financing a sustainable blue economy, and protecting marine ecosystems through inclusive multilateral mechanisms.

This workshop notably contributed to consolidating the African voice ahead of UNOC-3 and emphasized the importance of intergenerational mobilization for a sustainable ocean future, the press release concludes.
