Morocco plays a key role in the reconfiguration of global supply chains, serving as an energy and trade corridor connecting Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic basin, capable of facilitating access for millions of consumers to various forms of energy at affordable prices, said Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, on Tuesday in Houston, Texas.
During a meeting as part of the annual CERAWeek conference, a gathering of global energy leaders, with the participation of U.S. Secretaries of Energy Chris Wright and Interior Doug Burgum, as well as several ministers and leaders from the oil and gas industry, Ms. Benali indicated that the construction of a bi-directional corridor between Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic basin is not only a matter of security that factors into competitiveness but also, and above all, a matter of accessibility for everyone in our region.
The Atlantic Corridor is, she said, designed to “provide access to other forms of energy for 400 million consumers in Africa” and to achieve significant economies of scale.
Detailing the main points of Morocco’s energy strategy, the minister emphasized that connectivity is an essential pillar of a triptych, the other two foundations being renewable energy and energy efficiency.
It is within this vision that the Kingdom, she explained, has invested heavily in achieving connectivity with the aim of “unlocking economic growth in this part of Africa and linking it to Europe.”
The construction of the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline is a key element in this strategy, the minister asserted, adding that in addition to gas supply, the Africa-Atlantic pipeline could also serve in the transfer of green hydrogen.
Recognized as the main annual gathering of the energy sector, CERAWeek 2025 brings together in Houston, the global energy capital, more than 450 influential leaders, as well as ministers, senior officials, and industry experts.
This conclave of participants also includes representatives from over 2,050 companies across 80 countries, providing a privileged platform for dialogue on strategic issues as the world enters a new era of energy transition.
