Morocco has exceptional assets in energy, affirmed Gérard Mestrallet, the special envoy of the French President for the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor, on Thursday in Rabat.

Among these assets are “a strong, regular wind, especially in the South, remarkable sunshine, available land, a very well-structured administrative and ministerial organization, hydrogen supply,” and proximity to Europe, Mr. Mestrallet stated to the press after a meeting with the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka.

These assets allow for considering Morocco as a privileged partner of Europe in energy matters, he noted, adding that this perspective is the subject of “extremely promising” exchanges and work.

Furthermore, discussions focused on the production of hydrogen, ammonia, and e-fuels, the transport of this energy, as well as the possibility of connectivity between Morocco and France, and thus Europe, in energy matters, Mr. Mestrallet added.

“It is the entirety of these perspectives that we came to explore, with a particular focus on the potential electrical connection between Morocco (Nador) and France (Marseille),” he said.

Both parties are currently conducting in-depth work on the conditions that would make this connection possible, Mr. Mestrallet specified.

For his part, Mr. Baraka indicated that discussions also focused on the possibility of exporting green hydrogen between the Kingdom and France through Moroccan port infrastructures.

The minister emphasized the significant role that the Nador West Med port could play in the development of the energy sector in Morocco.

This meeting, which is part of the cooperation agreement in the energy field signed by Morocco and France during the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the Kingdom, was attended by the French ambassador to Rabat, Christophe Lecourtier, and the chairman of the board of the Electricity Transport Network, Xavier Piechaczyk.
