The Casablanca-Settat region and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have signed a declaration of intent aimed at accelerating the transition to a circular economy.

A strategic commitment to sustainable development

Signed by Abdellatif Maâzouz, president of the regional council, and Sanae Lahlou, UNIDO representative in Morocco, this declaration is part of the SWITCH to Circular Economy Value Chains (SWITCH2CE) project, co-financed by the European Union and the Finnish government. The goal is to promote sustainable growth, reduce carbon emissions, create jobs, and improve environmental quality.

Concrete actions for plastic waste management

The agreement includes several initiatives, including:

    • The collection of plastic waste according to innovative practices.
    • The creation of storage centers in retail locations and residential neighborhoods.
    • Training and improving the working conditions of waste pickers, key players in informal recycling.

The regional council and UNIDO also commit to developing recycling solutions for PET packaging, strengthening the capacities of local stakeholders, and promoting the growth of a more environmentally friendly industry.

A partnership to accelerate the ecological transition

According to Abdellatif Maâzouz, this initiative is part of the 2022-2027 regional development plan, with the aim of reducing plastic pollution and increasing the collection points for recyclable waste.

For her part, Sanae Lahlou emphasized the importance of strengthening local partnerships to accelerate this ecological transition. She stressed the need to pool the efforts of all stakeholders to optimize recycling solutions and sustainably anchor the circular economy in the region.
