The African Union of Broadcasting (UAR) announced the holding, on the occasion of International Radio Day, on February 13 and 14 in Dakar, of the second Media Summit on climate change and disaster risk reduction.
Under the theme “Radio at the Heart of Communities: Together Facing the Climate Challenge,” this event will explore ways to strengthen the use of radio as a tool for awareness, education, and mobilization, according to a statement from the organizers.
“This international meeting (…) will bring together journalists, experts, climatologists/environmentalists, policymakers, and representatives of civil society to discuss the crucial role of radio in the fight against climate change,” the same source indicates.
Organized by the African Union of Broadcasting, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and Senegalese Radio and Television (RTS), this Summit aims to share best practices, particularly by exchanging experiences on the use of radio to raise awareness of the climate emergency, strengthening the capacities of journalists and radio producers in the field of climate, and fostering partnerships among the various actors involved in the fight against climate change, the statement continues.
“In a hyper-connected world, radio remains an essential medium, especially in rural areas and isolated communities. Its portability and resilience make it an indispensable tool for disseminating vital information about climate change and encouraging prevention,” notes the same source.
