The Regional Commission for Human Rights of Guelmim-Oued Noun organized a study day this week dedicated to the theme “The situation of oases in the region and the prospects for sustainable development”. This event brought together experts, civil society organizations, and decision-makers to discuss the state of the oases in the region and solutions to preserve this unique heritage.

The Importance of Oases: A Heritage to Protect

Oases, true symbols of cultural identity and sustainable development, play a central role in Morocco’s cultural and natural heritage. The organizers emphasized that these precious ecosystems deserve special attention, especially in the face of the numerous environmental and social challenges they encounter.

Ibrahim Laghazal, president of the Regional Commission for Human Rights, reminded that oases are one of the pillars of Moroccan civilization. However, he warned of their increasing fragility due to climatic, economic, and social factors. He called for the adoption of innovative and scientific solutions to address these challenges.

Initiatives for Sustainable Development of Oases

During this day, several speakers highlighted ongoing efforts:

    • Lalla Mezliki, vice-president of the Regional Council of Guelmim-Oued Noun, mentioned the Regional Development Program 2022-2027, which includes projects for the rehabilitation and development of oases, as well as strengthening social inclusion and water infrastructure.
    • Ahmed Forak, delegate of the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and the Argan Tree (ANDZOA), presented the strategic vision for 2030, which targets the fight against desertification, sustainable water resource management, flood prevention, and fire reduction in oasis areas.

    A Call for Collective Action

This meeting highlighted the urgency of a general mobilization to preserve the oases, which represent not only an ecological wealth but also an essential pillar for local communities. Collaboration between experts, institutional actors, and civil society is crucial to ensure their sustainability in the face of growing pressures.

Through this initiative, the Guelmim-Oued Noun region demonstrates its willingness to combine heritage conservation and sustainable development while engaging in a comprehensive approach to combat the effects of climate change.
