The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has designated Morocco as a key player in its 2025-2029 infrastructure strategy, highlighting its central role in sustainability and resilience.

A strategic convergence between the EBRD and Morocco

Morocco, a member of the South-East Mediterranean (SEMED) region, stands out for its alignment with EBRD priorities. In 2023, 56% of EBRD investments in the country were dedicated to sustainable infrastructure, reflecting a synergy between Morocco’s national vision and global imperatives regarding energy transition, connectivity, and climate resilience.

Strengthening critical infrastructure for the future

Through strategic funding, such as the 300 million euros granted in 2020 to ONDA, ADM, and ONEE, Morocco has strengthened the sustainability of its critical infrastructure. These funds have enabled:

    • Modernization of airports by ONDA to better withstand climate hazards.
    • Improvement of highways by ADM, enhancing regional and national connectivity.
    • Optimization of water and electricity by ONEE to meet the needs of a growing population.

Sustainable water management: a model for the future

In the face of water stress, Morocco is relying on innovative solutions. The irrigation project for the Saïss plain, financed by a loan of 150 million euros, introduces modern drip irrigation systems, balancing agricultural productivity with the preservation of water resources. This project illustrates the Kingdom’s determination to ensure food security while adapting to the impacts of climate change.

More sustainable cities and port infrastructure

Initiatives like the “Green Cities” program, launched in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region with a loan of 12 million euros, aim to promote environmentally friendly cities. At the same time, the ports of Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar have benefited from funding of 65 million euros to integrate green technologies, enhancing their energy efficiency and climate resilience.

    Energy transition and water security

Morocco is also positioning itself as a leader in energy transition in Africa, with investments in renewable energies supported by the EBRD. Furthermore, a loan of 200 million euros granted to the OCP Group to develop desalination infrastructure and promote the reuse of wastewater strengthens the country’s water security while meeting the needs of industries.

    A model of international collaboration

The EBRD’s 2025-2029 strategy positions Morocco as an example of successful cooperation between local and global objectives. By mobilizing public-private partnerships and integrating innovative solutions, the Kingdom is transforming structural challenges into economic and environmental opportunities.

A vision for a sustainable future

With a clear strategic approach, ambitious projects, and strong collaboration with the EBRD, Morocco is asserting itself as a regional leader in sustainable development. This model of inclusive growth, focused on sustainability, offers an inspiring roadmap to address global challenges while enhancing national competitiveness.
