Morocco is strengthening its water management strategy by accelerating the construction of 40 small and medium-sized dams in the southeastern provinces. The Ministry of Equipment and Water plans to complete these infrastructures by 2027, as part of the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027. This initiative aims to improve rainwater collection and enhance water resources in a region particularly affected by the effects of climate change.

    **A response to climate challenges**

During a parliamentary session, Minister Nizar Baraka emphasized the importance of these dams in combating floods and optimizing the use of rainfall. The 40 dams under construction will be distributed across several provinces: 12 in Zagora, 10 in Tinghir, 12 in Ouarzazate, 3 in Midelt, and 3 in Errachidia.

Already, the rainfall recorded in September has shown encouraging results. The filling rate of the Drâa-Oued Noun basin increased from 12% to 29.2%, and that of Guir-Ziz-Rheris rose from 24.4% to 40.8%, also contributing to the recharge of groundwater.

**An ambitious program and significant investments**

In addition to these dams, the ministry plans to construct 129 additional water infrastructures with a total budget of 4.3 billion dirhams. Once operational, these dams will be managed by hydraulic basin agencies or local authorities.

The government is also investing in innovative devices to maximize rainwater collection. These initiatives include the installation of tanks, semi-buried structures, and artificial groundwater recharge systems, particularly in schools in the most vulnerable areas. Each year, 80 million dirhams are allocated to these projects in regions lacking surface or groundwater.

**Save and reuse for sustainable management**

As part of the National Water Plan, Morocco is adopting complementary measures, such as financial incentives, legislative adjustments, and awareness campaigns, to promote sustainable water management. The goal is to save up to 300 million cubic meters of drinking water per year through the reuse of rainwater for irrigation and other uses.

**A resilient future for southeastern Morocco**

With these infrastructures and devices, Morocco is striving to secure its water resources and address the climate challenges faced by the southeast. This ambitious program reflects the country’s commitment to sustainable and innovative water management, essential for ensuring the resilience of this vulnerable region.
