Morocco is now positioning itself as a key player in the field of green hydrogen, thanks to an ambitious national strategy aimed at transforming the Kingdom into a hub for clean energy production for Africa and the world, said the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, on Tuesday in Marrakech.

Speaking at the opening of the fourth edition of the “World Power-to-X Summit,” Ms. Benali emphasized that the development of green hydrogen represents an essential lever for the Kingdom’s energy transition and a priority axis of the national low-carbon strategy.

“Green hydrogen is not only a promising technology to address climate challenges, but it is also a key element for the transition to clean and sustainable economic models,” she clarified, adding that “Morocco is determined to play its role as a regional leader in renewable energies, and green hydrogen will be at the heart of this transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

In this perspective, the minister highlighted the initiative of the “Morocco Offer for Green Hydrogen,” which is based on a holistic and transparent approach, providing national and international investors with clear visibility for the progressive development of integrated projects.

“This offer is supported by incentive measures and a solid regulatory framework, ensuring the mobilization of the necessary resources for the success of these projects,” she explained.

In this context, Ms. Benali reminded that a land base of 1 million hectares is being made available, of which 300,000 will be accessible in a first phase to project holders, noting that the Kingdom intends to play a leading role in the production and export of renewable energies, while enhancing its attractiveness for investments in the clean technology sector.

Furthermore, Ms. Benali stressed the importance of international and regional cooperation to address global energy challenges.

“Green hydrogen and renewable energies offer a unique opportunity for Africa to accelerate its economic development while committing to a sustainable development trajectory,” she noted before concluding that Morocco, with its natural potential and infrastructure, is ready to actively contribute to this collective effort.
