Energy cooperation between Morocco and France is intensifying, with a particular focus on natural hydrogen. The French operator Storengy – ENGIE SAS, a subsidiary of the ENGIE Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with ONHYM to explore the potential of natural hydrogen in Morocco.

    ### Agreement Details

Ms. Amina Benkhdra, Director General of ONHYM, and Alain Caracatzanis, General Director of Storengy – ENGIE SAS, signed this agreement at the end of July 2024. It concerns the exploration of natural hydrogen potential in the coastal Meseta region, which includes the Berrechid, Ben Slimane, and Doukkala basins. This protocol is part of the strategy to promote the natural hydrogen potential discovered by ONHYM, aiming to develop this promising resource to decarbonize local industries.

    ### Commitments and Perspectives

Storengy, a global leader in underground natural gas storage, sees this agreement as a significant advancement in the development of natural hydrogen, complementing renewable hydrogen. The project has the potential to make Morocco a pioneer in assessing this resource, thus contributing to the decarbonization of local industries.

Loïc Jaegert-Huber, CEO of ENGIE North Africa, and Constant Maton, Hydrogen Project Director, are also involved in this project. Storengy reaffirms its commitment to natural hydrogen after launching similar projects in France. This collaboration with ONHYM marks an important step in addressing climate challenges and promoting a decarbonized energy future.

    ### Morocco’s Hydrogen Ambitions

This project is part of Morocco’s national strategy to promote hydrogen, which has been highlighted with the “Morocco Offer” initiative. This initiative aims to attract investors in the green hydrogen sector and strengthen the country’s industrial capacities. In March, Mohcine Jazouli, the Minister Delegate for Investment, met with Catherine Fiamma MacGregor, CEO of ENGIE, to discuss investment opportunities in this sector.

Morocco’s commitment to hydrogen has been reaffirmed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who emphasized the importance of this sector for the sustainable development of the country. A circular from the head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, issued in March 2024, details the implementation of the Morocco Offer for the development of green hydrogen. It provides an incentive framework and support for project holders, as well as the provision of land and other necessary resources to support this promising sector.

    ### Conclusion

Morocco’s strategic vision, supported by international partnerships such as that with Storengy – ENGIE SAS, positions the country as a key player in the development of natural hydrogen. With its natural resources, geographical position, and world-class infrastructure, Morocco is well-placed to play a crucial role in the global energy transition.
