A first workshop on green hydrogen was recently held in Rabat, organized by the European Union in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy Transition. This event, part of the Morocco-EU Green Partnership signed in October 2022, aims to align regulations to promote a decarbonized, resilient, and inclusive economy. The discussions highlighted Morocco’s progress in green hydrogen and the EU’s expectations, thus consolidating the Kingdom’s role as a future key exporter to Europe.
This workshop allowed for a better understanding of EU standards, strengthening Morocco’s position as a preferred partner in the field of green hydrogen. Among the participants were Jean-Christophe Filori, head of Cooperation at the European Union in Morocco, Gaëtan Ducroux, in charge of Energy, Climate, and Environment Policies, and Abderraouf Benabou, director of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency. This dialogue emphasized the need to bring legislative frameworks closer together for closer cooperation in the green transition.
Since the signing of the Morocco-EU Green Partnership, concrete actions have multiplied to promote a transition to a decarbonized economy. Masen recently launched a call for projects for the “Morocco Green Hydrogen Offer,” inviting candidates to develop integrated projects for the production of green hydrogen in Morocco. The EU, being the first region to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for hydrogen, serves as a reference for international trade, including Morocco’s ambitions to become a major exporter of green hydrogen to Europe.
Several pilot projects are currently under development in Morocco, in partnership with EU member states. The publication of the “Morocco Offer” for green hydrogen last March marks a significant step, facilitating trade exchanges and practical experience between European and Moroccan companies. This workshop is also part of the “EU Climate Dialogues,” a platform that has strengthened dialogue between the EU and Morocco on various climate issues, including carbon pricing and adaptation to climate change. Green hydrogen is the third theme of these dialogues, with other thematic meetings planned in the coming months.
